About this site

Purpose of this site

The US Exit Tax Checker is a free, independent tool that helps US citizens and long-term green card holders work out whether giving up their status would make them a covered expatriate, and so trigger the US exit tax. Expatriation can carry a one-time tax as if you sold everything you own the day before you leave, and many people do not realise they are exposed until late.

You generally become a covered expatriate if you exceed a net-worth threshold, exceed an average income-tax threshold, or cannot certify five years of tax compliance. Any one of these can apply. This tool walks through the tests so you can see where you stand.

How it works

The checker runs entirely in your browser. You enter your net worth, recent average tax liability, and compliance status; it applies the three covered-expatriate tests and flags which, if any, you meet. The mark-to-market calculation, exclusion amount and deferred-compensation rules are simplified; IRS rules govern.

Independent and neutral

This is an independently operated site that builds simple tools to remove the friction from complex US tax rules. We are not affiliated with the IRS, and the checker does not collect or store your figures; everything is processed locally in your browser.

Before you rely on it

Expatriation tax is highly complex and the result here is an informational estimate, not tax or legal advice. Please review our disclaimer and consult a qualified US cross-border tax professional before renouncing.
